Barry Cope is the Group Managing Director of the Building Compliance Testers’ Association (BCTA), an organisation that operates internationally recognised certification schemes for the construction industry. BCTA ensures that professionals in key compliance sectors demonstrate competence and uphold industry standards. The association’s largest and most well-known scheme is the Air Tightness Testing & Measurement Association (ATTMA), which operates across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand.
Barry’s career began in engineering and physics, working at Oxford Instruments Analytical before transitioning into the construction industry with BM TRADA (now Element/WarringtonFire) in 2007. He spent several years conducting testing and consultancy on building air tightness before expanding his expertise into acoustics. During this time, he designed and built two of the UK’s few dedicated acoustic sound insulation suites.
In 2014, Barry took on the role of Technical Manager at Site Sound Ltd, where he further developed his leadership and technical expertise. He joined BCTA in 2015 as General Manager and has since played a key role in expanding the organisation’s global reach and influence.
Barry is deeply committed to raising industry standards through training, advocacy, and compliance. He is a strong proponent of integrity in the construction sector, championing the principle of doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
